Picadillo Recipe
By Isabella Pena This is a recipe I’m writing for Thanksgiving in honor of my family’s home country, Cuba. This is a time greater than ever to especially remember the massive numbers of native peoples who have been nearly or entirely wiped out when the Americas were “discovered”, and why I make a point to embrace my heritage now more than ever. The recipe will be in only English, translated from a book passed down from my bisabuela (great grandmother) when she came from Cuba

The history of Veterans Day
Brettley Witte Veterans Day is a holiday to celebrate the veterans who served in the military. Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day in May. Veterans Day is a day for celebrating the service of all who have worn the uniform, not just those who died in combat. It is largely intended to thank living veter

The state of our Nation
By Isabella Pena An event in the nation that is most commonly only around one week has lasted almost a month at this point. Job layoffs of mostly private-sector positions have been popular during this time, but the specific number of how many have been fired due to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inability to work properly during the government shutdown, and without a head leader. The last Commissioner of the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), Erika McEntarfer, was fired in

Tales of the Will-o’-the-Wisp
By Isabella Pena Estimated to be originally found in European folklore, will-o’-the-wisps have different origins depending on who you ask, each with their own slightly different names and stories. In Ancient Rome, they were called ignis fatuus (foolish flame in latin), usually seen by travellers around bogs or marshy locations. In the UK, they are sometimes referred to as hinkypunks , a one-legged wispy figure that leads travellers towards treasure or danger. In Slavic fo

Progress of the Phone Ban
By Isabella Pena I do not think the phone ban is working as the people who introduced the law had planned. In every class that I attend, regardless of whether other students have been caught or not, there is a phone out. Some students and teachers even state that there is a separate policy forbidding students from listening to music WITH wired earbuds during class, which surprised me. I still do not know if that is a real policy or not, but when I tried to research the det

These will be the majority of media-related costumes, but of course, you can ask others or go online for more personalized costumes. The History of Halloween
By Isabella Pena Nobody knows what year it started specifically, only that it originated around 3,000 BCE and was celebrated as “Samhain” long before the ancient Celts, as a celebration of the beginning of the new year, winter coming, and the harvest season arriving. 609 CE, because of Martin Luther and his 95 Theses, the Roman Catholic Church made a new holiday called “All Hallows Day”; better known as All Saints’ day or All Souls' Day. It was made to be celebrated

Bikes over Cars
By Isabella Pena Did the school take your driver’s license away, or can you just not find the time to take the test? There’s another answer that isn’t hitching a ride with a friend, and it lies in another Tennessee law. Under the law of Tennessee, class 1 to 3 bikes are recognized as vehicles and are subject to the same laws as motor vehicles, except for a few differences. For normal manual bikes, no license is needed to ride on the road; you only need to understand the r
