How to Stop Bad Habits

   By: Tiffany Margolis

Stopping bad habits is difficult, especially if you’ve had these habits for most of your life. But there is a way to stop these habits from continuing. These bad habits can take many forms. Examples of bad habits include procrastination, smoking, poor eating habits, poor sleep, and negativity. All of these have very negative effects on your life, even when you don’t notice them.

Ways to stop bad habits include avoiding tempting situations or people, joining a support group that specializes in what you’re struggling with, and replacing the bad habits with good ones, such as eating less junk food and going to the gym to exercise. However, there are more ways to stop your bad habits, such as figuring out what triggers you the most, considering the potential consequences of not stopping your bad habits, thinking about obesity when you're eating junk food, and rewarding yourself for both small and large achievements. Some good habits to adopt are waking up early so you don’t have to rush to get ready, saying positive things about yourself and recognizing your greatest qualities, and also staying hydrated and exercising to stay in shape. Making a to-do list and trying to complete everything on it, getting more sleep to allow your brain to work properly, reducing caffeine intake, and feeling empathy for someone’s situation can also help them feel less alone.
