How Peer Tutoring Has Changed My Life

   By: Jaymeson Clark

Peer tutoring has been a game-changer for me. It's not just about academics; it's about building connections, gaining confidence, and discovering a new perspective on learning. Before I started tutoring, I saw learning as a normal activity that everyone does the same. I focused on my own grades, often missing out on the collaborative aspect of education. Peer tutoring has opened a new mindset on how to live life and not complain about the life I have. I have slowly grown to learn that more people in this world would rather have my life than live the one that they have now. Being a peer tutor, complaining is the number one thing I refrain from doing. In the special ed department, we live by the code “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” No matter what we do, whether it's the Special Olympics, testing, or simply doing a task, we always take time to incorporate the code into our daily lives.

I started peer tutoring my sophomore year of high school and never wanted to stop. I found myself going through different college majors, and the ones that I found interesting didn't suit me well until I had role models Marena Miller, Kat Steffan, and Hannah Stansberry help guide me further into the special education field. I’m an advocate for these kids, and though I am still enrolled here at Powell High School, I take my role seriously as if I work at the school. I am here at 7:40 in the morning to help with bus duty. I make sure that I get our students to the nurse on time. It's the little things that one person can do for the kids that change their lives. I go above and beyond for them and I try to keep it a safe environment for them When I hear foul language that happens around them I will call that person out, If I see someone laughing and one of them struggling to do something I will also call them out, that's just my nature I care for people especially ones that need immediate attention. After high school, I plan to major in special education and change more lives in the special education field.
