Soda Cakes

By: Isabella Pena

Soda cakes are a unique spin on the normal dessert you can make from the boxes of mix sold in a majority of grocery stores, combining carbonated drinks and cake together to make unique and new flavors. The recipe is simple, even more so than following the box instructions. All you need is a can of soda, which is 8 oz or 1 cup, and one box of cake mix. In a bowl, you combine all 8 oz of soda of your choice with your chosen cake mix, then follow the box instructions for how to bake.

The end product is a light and airy cake, retaining some of the flavor from both the soda and cake mix, while creating a unique new one, too. This can also be used to make cupcakes with 8 oz of soda, and brownies with 12 oz of soda or 1 ½ cups.

Some different soda cake combinations that have been dubbed flavors include:

  • Vanilla cake + root beer = root beer float cake

  • Vanilla cake + orange soda = orange creamsicle cake

  • Vanilla cake + grape soda = purple cow cake

  • Strawberry cake + root beer = strawberry shortcake

  • Chocolate cake + root beer = brown cow cake

  • Chocolate cake + Diet Coke = sinless devil’s food cake

  • Lemon cake + Sprite = zesty lemon cake

  • Ginger spice cake + ginger ale = ginger spice cake

  • Cherry chip cake + cherry Dr. Pepper = very cherry chip cake

  • Brownies + cherry Dr. Pepper = cherry chocolate brownies
