You might have heard about how AI(Artificial Intelligence) affects our environment in bad ways. Using massive amounts of water to cool the computers, high energy consumption, and carbon emissions. But I bet you did not know that AI is messing with our electrical frequency, which distorts power supplies. This is called bad harmonics. You can think about bad harmonics as the static noise you hear on a speaker’s volume when it is higher than it can handle. What this causes is your electronics to reach higher temperatures than recommended. It also causes your refrigerators and air conditioners’ motors to rattle, which can be an issue in the future that can cost up to billions of dollars in damages. The distorted waves cause bad power quality and increase the risk of sparks, and can even lead to home fires. AI data centers are using so much power that it is causing the demand for electricity supplies all over the world, which is going to make the electrical supplies increase in price, and can even cause outages. A problem in the US, there is a lack of investments for the grid with the upcoming demand for AI. The electricity demand will increase 16% over the next 5 years in America. If we don’t improve the electrical grid, the harmonics are just going to get worse.
