This year, the 2026 Winter Olympics were outstanding! They took place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The opening ceremony was on February 6th, and the closing ceremony took place on February 22nd. This area in Italy is known for its architecture, expensive
quality shopping, food, museums, and more.
Among the many winter sports are biathlon, bobsled, curling, ice hockey, luge, and skiing. The most beautiful of all the competitions, in my opinion, was figure skating. The top 3 most popular Winter Olympic sports are figure skating, ice hockey, and skiing. The physical and mental challenges and skills these athletes must possess are impressive. For example, in ice hockey, the fastest speed a puck has ever gone is over 160 km/h. In skiing, the most common performance is freestyle, including aerials and moguls. Now, for figure skating, the most popular performance ever includes Baby Starr Andrews’ “Whip My Hair” routine, receiving perfect scores with a 6.0. For the first time, Ski Mountaineering, also known as skimo, is an official sport.
The new official sport includes racing uphill and downhill on skis. Another interesting thing is that this year is the first time since 2014 that NHL players can compete. These sports have many mental and physical challenges that the athletes must process, and they are always truly impressive. The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics will be remembered not mostly for the records, but for the sportsmanship brought together from Italy and all over the world.
