Powell Parents Speak Out on Proposed Rezoning at local Powell Elementary

By: Kenzie Gibson

For many families, a school is more than just a building; it’s a place where kids feel safe, supported, and connected. That’s why a rezoning plan for Powell Elementary School has raised concerns among parents in the community.

The Knox County School Board is considering moving some students to nearby schools to help reduce overcrowding at Powell Elementary. District officials say rezoning could help balance enrollment and improve learning conditions by creating smaller class sizes and more space for students.

Many parents worry about how the change could affect their children. Concerns include longer bus rides, students being separated from friends and teachers, and the emotional impact of switching schools, especially for younger kids. Families also want more clarity on how rezoning decisions will be made and how much input parents will have.

From the school board’s perspective, overcrowded schools make it harder for teachers to give students the attention they need. Rezoning is one option the district is considering to better use space across nearby schools and improve classroom environments. Parents may need to adjust work schedules or find new childcare if school locations or times change.

Rezoning could split siblings between schools, making daily routines more complicated for families.Loss of community. Many parents have built relationships with teachers, staff, and other families at their child’s current school, and rezoning can disrupt that support system. As the district continues discussing the plan, parents are asking for transparency and a chance to be heard. The final decision will affect many families, and how it is handled could shape trust between the school system and the community.
