Armistice Day began after World War I ended in memory of everyone who died while serving during the war. After the deadliest war in history, World War II, Armistice Day was renamed to Veterans Day. Last Tuesday, it was celebrated on November 11th, the same day the First World War ended. Proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, honoring military personnel and veterans, Armistice Day was made to remember the armistice that ended World War I on November 11th, 1918.
Just thirty-five years later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day just after the end of World War II and the Korean War in 1954. Now the holiday officially honors veterans who served during all wars or maintained peace when wars were not happening. Today, Veterans Day is celebrated by personal actions that could be thanking a veteran close to you for their service, or larger events like public parades, ceremonies, musical tributes, and wreath-laying events.
How did you celebrate Veterans Day, and do you know any veterans that you talk to in your life?
