5 Things You Can Do to Prepare for a Winter Power Outage

By: Amber Stevens

Power outages can last a while when they happen, so it’s a good idea to make sure that you have the necessities that you need so here’s 15 things you may need whenever a power outage occurs. First, Bob Vila says to stock up on batteries. Having backup batteries is good in case you need a flashlight or a radio. Second, check your flashlight. According to Jennifer Noonan, “Pitch the flashlights that don’t work, and make sure the working ones have new batteries in them. Purchase additional flashlights if necessary.” Also, make sure to use flashlights instead of candles because they are safer. Third, make sure you have gas in your car. Gas stations need electricity to pump gas into your car, and if there’s a power outage, then the pumps won't work. Fourth, make sure you have enough food and meals prepared beforehand. If you need to use the microwave, oven, etc to make or heat up food, it is not going to work. If the roads are bad enough, you want to make sure that you have what you need in case the roads are unsafe. Five, keep your faucet slightly on. If you don’t have your faucets running droplets, then if it gets cold enough, your pipes will freeze, and you will get no water out of them, or worse, your pipes will burst. Make sure you’re always prepared before a power outage, especially if it's in the winter, and make sure to stay safe!
