History Of Homecoming

By Breanna Naysmith

The Homecoming event is something we have all grown very familiar with involving a football game and a dance. Homecoming is so much more than that. It is so much more than dressing up for a dance and wanting to win. Its real purpose is to celebrate the school’s values and cultures. Homecoming is a traditional celebration that many schools participate in. It originated in the 20th century when the school's alumni were asked to visit their old friends and visit the school grounds again, hence the name 'homecoming’ like coming home. The reason for the dance, football game, and spirit week is to show appreciation to the school and how it has become a ‘home’ for students to look back on after graduation. One thing you may not know is that each club is allowed to have one representative to help them raise money for their club. This person is called the Homecoming Representative. The representative that raises the most money gets awarded Homecoming Queen. This time of year is an amazing opportunity for fundraising for your club along with the school. Overall, Homecoming is an unspoken rite of passage into high school.
