Discriminating Dress Code

Discriminating Dress Code

School dress codes have been around since 1969; yet, with all that time to progress and find a good dress code, there are still a lot of issues with it. One of the main issues is that it still targets women more. There are a couple of aspects of the dress code that apply to men, but most of the rules in the dress code only apply to women. For example, blouses and tops have to fully cover your abdomen, shirts showing any cleavage are prohibited, and shorts have to reach your fingertips.

Another issue is with enforcing the dress code. Teachers have to study a student's outfit to find something wrong with it, it's a little embarrassing and violating. Plus some rules in the dress code don’t cooperate with the human body. For instance, they say that your shorts have to go down to your fingertips but every single person's body is different, man or woman. Some people have longer or shorter torso, arms, or legs.

Many girls feel that those enforcing the policy target certain people. My friend was wearing a shirt with a V-cut top. It wasn't showing anything but her collarbone yet a male teacher told her it was inappropriate and that she needed to zip up her jacket. Another girl I saw was a bit smaller than my friend and she had shorts that didn’t even go past her bum and no one batted an eye. If we’re going to have a dress code but not enforce it on everyone equally, there’s no point in having the dress code. Either make a less strict or check students equally and fairly.
