Should Students Be Allowed To Choose What They Want to Study?

By Aiesha Patel

Many high school students must take classes they don’t need. A student should choose what they want to do in the future before high school and follow that pathway throughout their high school just like college students would. For example, if someone wants to do something in the medical field, they should take medical, math, and science classes.

If a high school student decides to change their pathway they should be allowed to change with the help of their counselor. However, this would be okay because it takes different people a different amount of time to find exactly what they want to do in the future. If someone doesn’t know what they want to do in the future they can take basic classes like Math and English. They could also take career exploration classes that could help them take a look at what each type of career is like or what interests them the most. Once the students know what they want to do they can switch into the path they would like to take. I feel like many students would have better grades and a better GPA if they were to choose the classes they want. Since the students chose these classes they would more likely be interested, engaged, and more likely to pay attention. Also, these classes would help students in the real world compared to having classes that won’t help with anything. If someone were to be a math teacher they wouldn’t want to know about history they would want to learn about math.
