The definition of Renaissance is: the revival of or renewed interest in something. The Renaissance program here at Powell High School is exactly that. Jostens is the company that came up with the idea to change the way students think about school. They are changing the way schools look, the achievements students receive, the outlook students have on life, and the way that students treat each other. As Jostens says, “Walk into any Jostens Renaissance school and you’ll immediately notice the difference”. Not to mention, Jostens Renaissance schools show increased attendance, graduation rates, academic performance, teacher retention rates, improved behavior, and a boost in school spirit.
The Harbor is another thing that makes the Renaissance program special and unique. The Harbor is a series of free, educational videos featuring Mike Smith and guests. It teaches students lessons that they can apply to life as a whole, not just school. Harbor videos provide students with real perspectives and real stories from real people. It helps students realize that it’s okay to stand out and be the change. It also helps students realize that whatever problems and obstacles they have to face, they aren’t alone.
The Renaissance program is going to bring big changes to Powell High School. Some students said they have already noticed a difference. All of the Harbor videos, winter wishes, and incentive cards, are just the beginning. There is so much more to come! Some things we’ve done, students don’t even realize that Renaissance was involved. Such as, all the new decor in the hallways, dress up days for basketball homecoming, the halloween trick or treating, and more. . It will be a lengthy process for Powell to become a full fledged Renaissance school, but the wait will be worth it because the best is yet to come.
