The Second Amendment: A Right, Not A Privilege

By Madison Raley

The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment gives American citizens the right to bear arms & LEGALLY own a gun, even though some (if not most) democtratic/liberals/radical leftists are pushing to take that right away from the American people.

On Monday January 20th, 2020 a Gun Control Rally was held in Richmond, Virginia to address citizens' rights to own a firearm. While some people who attended were armed with everyday, typical firearms, others were as a News Talk 98.7 FM reporter stated, “Armed to the teeth.” As the rally proceeded, some attendees were disappointed to learn that they were not allowed to enter the State Capitol Building while armed. Therefore, some ralliers entered the Virginia State Capitol Building unarmed to protect and exercise their First Amendment; Freedom of speech.

On Tuesday January 21st, 2020, the day after the Gun Control Rally in Virginia, I just so happened to be flipping through radio stations and came across WQQK-FM-92-Q where they were broadcasting, “The D.L. Hughley Show”, and heard this statement, “it was a day of celebration for a man who peacefully protested for the rights of African Americans & we have a bunch of rich, white, men armed with automatic weapons, that are used to kill as many people as possible, in as little time as possible, but have a black man in a car with a tail light out and he’s getting pulled over.” This wouldn’t typically bother me because people say things like this just to start something, but here we are.

We have a diverse group of people fighting for a RIGHT that we have as Americans, and you have people trying to make into something it’s not. Gun ownership is not limited to a person’s color or gender. All American citizens have the right to own guns! Granted some own them legally and some illegally, no doubt, it’s not just “rich, white men” who own guns. Usually when shootings happen people go stir crazy and not for the reasons they should, all of sudden it turns into a politicized event about race, white power, or blame for another person or group instead of the shooters. The last time I checked a bullet and a gun have no gender, race, past, present, future, or political preference. A gun and a bullet is a gun and a bullet. Neither is capable of hurting or killing people alone. The gun is not at fault it is the person pulling the trigger, no matter who they are. Therefore, they should be the one punished. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens doesn't solve the problem.
