Ryanair is a very popular European discount airline corporation centered in Ireland. According to the Washington Post, over the weekend, on a flight from Barcelona, Spain to London, England, a white, unknown English man launched into a racist rant towards a 77-year-old, black woman. The rant was started when the man demanded the woman to get up from her aisle seat so he could get to his window seat; however, the woman has arthritis, so she could not immediately get up to let the man pass. Due to the woman’s short hesitation to get up from her seat, the man launched into a racist rant where he referred to her as an “ugly black [expletive]” and a “stupid, ugly cow”. Upon hearing the man yelling, the woman’s daughter stood up and confronted the man, which only seemed to irritate him further. The whole encounter was recorded and put online by a man named David Lawrence and has been viewed by millions.
British lawmaker David Lammy went on Twitter, establishing a boycott of Ryanair stating, ”Boycott Ryanair if it’s okay for a racist man to abuse an elderly black woman and remain on the plane. It’s 63 years since Rosa Parks said ‘No’ to sitting on the back of the Bus and we ain’t going back.”
As of now, the authorities in Essex are working with Ryanair to find the man. The authorities have stated that any hate crime will not be tolerated. However, there may not be anything that they can do to the man because, when it happened, the plane was grounded in Spain; unfortunately, it may be out of their jurisdiction. Ryanair officials still have yet to comment on the backlash.
