Two-time Olympian Aly Raisman made an announcement on social media Tuesday which stated, "It's true, I'm not going to be competing in Tokyo."
Raisman said she's taking much-needed time and space to reflect on her years of achievements. In her interview with CNN news back in February, she talks about her life under former Olympic team-physician Larry Nassar and the trauma she has accumulated due to his sexual abuse. In July 2017, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. On January 24, 2018 Nassar was re-sentenced to 175 years in a Michigan state prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of sexual assault of minors. She states, "The past 10 years have been such a whirlwind that I haven't really processed all that has happened. I've lived a pretty fast-paced life and sometimes I have to remind myself to slow down, unplug from technology and take the time to appreciate what I've experienced and learned."
This year’s Tokyo Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
